Okay. So I have great in-laws, too. My brother-in-law came to my work today, picked up my car, took it to get smogged, washed it, and returned it to the parking lot. ALL WHILE I WORKED! How cool is that? He took pity on me and my seriously late registration (is April 10 really 6 weeks ago?) and told me that I couldn't argue, he was just doing it. I feel more than a little guilty about it, though. I kind of feel like I should have had my crap together a little more and got it done. Sigh. I apparently take every opportunity available to beat myself up these days.

The school psychologist has been interviewing the teachers at school and gathering information to take to the superintendent about post traumatic stress.** I was able to give a slightly different perspective than most, because I wasn't actually there when it happened, and I am able to see the effects of everything as a sort of outsider. The most striking thing I have noticed is that the rather close knit staff seems to have fractured. There are small groups of people who are still close, but there are many more outliers than there were before I left. It makes me sad to see it. There is also the feeling that blame has been directed toward the staff, not just by the community, but by the district office. I can feel that, too (although it has already been established that I do that sort of thing to myself). There have been too many staff development programs aimed at how we can detect and deter bullying for it to not feel like there is something being said indirectly. That was compounded by an in-service we had two weeks ago. The victim's name was brought up, things were said, and the end result was that most of my school's staff left the district wide meeting. It was ugly. Anyway, I am hoping that the school psychologist (who is also dealing with PTSD because he was with the victim right after he was shot) is able to help healing begin at the school.

**We were given a short questionnaire to determine our risk of PTSD. When I answered the questions about the shooting, I am not at risk. However, I answered the questions again about the babies, and I score as very high risk. Hmm...kind of knew that one was coming.

And for all you commenters out there, I saw on another blog (forgive me when I say I can't remember where) that a question was asked for the commenters to answer. That way, you have something pretty straight forward to answer if you can't think of anything to say after posting countless comments. Anyway, if you want it, here is today's question: What kitchen appliance could you not live without and why?

My answer is my microwave. What did people do before this little technological wonder was created? I can't imagine myself trying to cook the old fashioned way, you know, on a stove, now that the boys are here. I love the ease of popping something into the microwave, blinking a few times, and viola, it is finished. Ahh, heaven.

  1. Ahhh...PTSD, the gift that keeps giving. I recommend finding a good therapist (and of course finding a free hour in your day for it, ha ha ha). I hope you get to a point where you can feel safe enough to begin to heal.

  2. Thanks for stopping by my blog :))

    Now first the question: hmmmmm
Since I dont really cook cook and mostly just throw things together sometimes this is a tough one.
Oh it just got a hell of a lot easier - my dishwasher. I hate to wash dishes. When mine crapped out and I was without for a few months (yes months) it was torture. So that is my answer.

    Next the snoring hubby (grrrrrrr)
I would do almost anything also and the word "almost" gets redifined and smaller everyday. Last night wasn't awful, I only had to nudge/kick/punch in the head twice. Not too bad. But yes I agree there are nights when the thoughts, they do swirl. Sometimes I have laid there thinking this is it - this is gonna be what we divorce over. After 24 years it is finally over. Then of course a new day dawns and I dont have time to go the divorce lawyer so he lucks out. Seriously though it is really, really hard.
But alas, the things we do for love (or a good nights sleep) ...

  3. I can think of something to say so I'm not answering your silly question because personally...I could do without my kitchen altogether. HI. take out :)

How terrible that your staff is being divided. Like funerals it seems to bring out the worst in people a lot of times.
I'm sure that after everyone has had time to deal with their feelings and all the emotions that were brought to the surface, the healing may begin.

I hope you use that questionnaire to your advantage.

  4. I am a junior high teacher as well! What subject do you teach? I will have to read more of your blog to find out more about this incident. Anyway, my favorite appliance is my bread maker. Love that thing! (from NCLM)

  5. I will admit to having written a few posts recently that would make it easier for random people to leave comments on my blog. Yes, I do like to know what authors/books people recommend but I wrote about it to help people out who might not otherwise have something to talk about.

To answer your question... the fridge. I HATE warm fruit, yet I am also a fruit junkie.

And as to your previous post one of the first blogs I discovered and continue to read is www.angiealltheway.blogspot.com

  6. I gotta go with the dishwasher. I can't even imagine having to wash all those damn Dr Brown's bottles by hand ... Thank goodness the days of bottles are behind me!

How everyone is doing good over at your place ...

  7. I think my favorite appliance would have to be the rice cooker. Why, you ask? Not really sure b/c it isn't that hard to cook rice on the stovetop. But it is so simple to throw rice and water in there, press the button and ta-da!

  8. So sorry to hear about your situation at the school.

Hmmm. The one thing in my kitchen that I couldn't live without... that is a hard question. I would have to say the fridge. Almost everything else can be substituted - dishwasher and sink, stove and microwave, toaster and toaster oven, blender and food processor etc.

  9. I'm so sorry that the staff is being split apart -- it can't be helping anyone to deal with the stress.

As for kitchen appliances, I'm torn between the microwave and the toaster oven. I really love toast and other toasted bread products, and I love that it's also a mini-oven, which can be used to heat leftovers even if the microwave is on the fritz. But it's not so good with liquids and liquidy foods, which brings me back to the microwave. I think I gave too much thought to this :)

  10. Here from NCLM.

I also have great in-laws. It makes such a difference to married life!

I'm a chef, food writer and cooking teacher so I have quite a few kitchen appliances.....hmmmm....I probably couldn't live without my Magimix (food processor) as it saves me so much time for chopping stuff. I also love my blender (for smoothies) and my ice cream maker - not a "can't live without" but a very "nice to have".

The biggest essential one is actually the fridge!

    Enjoyed your post. Thank you.

Wow sounds like you have been through something awful at your school, hope all is alright.
Well, we don't own a microwave, haven't had one in the house since I left home at 17, so i have lived for almost 13 years without one! I head things on the stove, also no kids, so no rush.
Hmmmm because there is no nuker, I could not live without my stove or tea pot, I named 2, I cheated, but a teapot is not quite an appliance.

  13. So much of a ditto on the microwave. We couldn't get along with it!

  14. Hi Stacie,
Blog-question girlie wuz probably me, but totally forgiven!
I'd have to say my little cheapy handblender. Baby is a big eater and I'm blitzing away for all I'm worth most mornings.
    But microwave is good too.

  15. What an awesome BIL you have! If mine were that great, I'd be taking all kinds of help left and right.

Can I have two favorite appliances? I choose the microwave and the toaster oven. I LOVE my T.O., especially in summer! I have no idea how I ever got by without one.

  16. hmmm, personally I would say the fridge. Without that nothing would be able to stay fresh and we'd be eating crap out of boxes everyday... ugh!

    Fun question, thanks!
