Friday Night Leftovers
- Well, I am now on antibiotic number three. My intestinal issues became more of the "explosive" variety, and I could no longer subject myself to it. The big D for over a week does not a happy body make. Sigh.
- I am feeling better I think. It's hard to tell for sure. I don't fall asleep at the drop of a hat now.
- I had a pretty intense experience at work this week. It left me pretty rattled. I am working on writing it up in a post.
- Today, Sh.awn decided that he needed to crawl under his bed and hide. Unfortunately, he has a big noggin. Somehow he managed to wedge his head between the bed and the floor. Ja.son took the opportunity to jump on the bed before I was able to untangle myself from under Jack and get there.
- Let's just say there was much crying, a crying boy on the naughty chair, and a funky forehead bruise by the time all was said and done.
- Jack's birthday is less than a week away. I am freaking out. How can my baby be so old?
- I think Ja.son is now able to read some words. New words. Without pictures. He can also accurately tell me the hour and half hour times on a clock. Blows my mind.
- Now I am second guessing my plan of keeping them out of school until the 2013-14 school year. They managed to make the deadline (Nov. 1) by 4 days, so technically they could start kinder this year. Ja.son is ready. I'm not sure if Sh.awn is. And I don't want to split them.
- They'd be the youngest in the class. They are boys. They have CP. Those three things together could mean bad news if they start this year. Or not.
- Keeping them out this year would let them have another year of maturation and therapy. They'd be the older kids in the class, rather than the youngest...
- I guess I have more thinking to do on the matter.
- I have a date with some girlfriends this weekend. We are going out to lunch and shopping. I am wildly excited. Yea!
- My cat has it out for me. She has now puked in two shoes. When I say puked in my shoes, I mean only in my shoes. WTF? There was nothing on the ground around the shoes. She didn't even really get any puke on the outside of the shoes. How the hell did she manage to get puke in BOTH of my damn shoes?
- I think the better question is why didn't she puke in Is.aac's shoes instead? :-)

I'm sure you're wiser to this than me since you're a teacher yourself, but a friend of mine who is an elementary school teacher said to base the kindergarten placement on their social readiness rather than their intelligence. I too am already fretting about this, as you know we are in a similar predicament with the very late birthday. Unfortunately here, early intervention stops the year they are eligible for school and then the school age program starts. So if we hold back, we go a year without therapy and that just isn't an option. So I will be sending my VERY young 4 year olds to kindergarten whether I want to or not and so I look for all positives in that regard. My boys are very social at 2, so at 4 they'll be ready - right?! Good luck with the decision :)

I feel your puke pain. The dog puked on our bed tonight - soaked through all the way down into the mattress. UGH.
ReplyDeleteI think, if I were you, I'd keep the boys out for the extra year, especially if you don't want them split up. Everyone has been adamantly glad we miss the cut off to start this year and says they'll benefit from the extra year of maturity before starting school. And personally, I was almost the oldest in my class and I was glad for it; my friends who were younger always struggled more to keep up academically and socially.

Boys tend to do better when they are at the older end of their class.
My boys are October 1 birthdays, and we are either doing a year of "Transitional Kindergarten" (new Pre-K program in CA) or another year of preschool, depending on the options available for Al.ex in special education. We think they can only grow in that extra year and don't feel a rush to put them in K next year.
