So what does one do for a child's first birthday party? I want to throw one for Jack, but I am seriously at a loss for what to do. I even have an idea for which invitations I'd pick, but I can't even decide on a freaking time. Is 3 pm too late?
Suggestions?
What kind of things do you guys do? What did you enjoy when you went to one?
Sigh. I am no good at this kind of thing.

With my first and even the first set we went all out. Invited all of our friends. Times were always scheduled around nap time as close to a meal as possible (since we were feeding adults) however you can just schedule it around the cake and ice-cream time too :)
With the last two. We did a family birthday party. Cuz. It's not really for them any ways :) and we were too tired to do anything.

We did small (family and close friends) parties for both girls. Tot had a Baby Einstein party and Bean had a Curious George party. I found some cute things for each of them and just ran with it. I love the party planning :)
If you have family and friends nearby either throw it at your house and make it simple. If there are quite a bit of kids look into renting out an indoor playground or go to a park if it is nice outside.
I like 3pm parties - right after nap.
Well, for the boys' first birthday, we baked them cupcakes, let them smash cake around, opened a few gifts, got accused of child neglect, and packed for an indefinitely long hospital stay. I kind of don't recommend it.
For other birthdays, we usually do afternoon - whenever naptime is over, so we've done 3 PM in the past for sure. Cake, ice cream, gifts. Family and close friends. Pizza or cold cuts for anyone who stays for dinner. I think for Nicholas, we're doing an ice cream theme because I want to make ice cream cone cupcakes and I have a nifty popsicle cake pan and we have a super cool ice cream maker ... and hopefully we'll be able to set up out on the deck and the entertainment will take care of itself (kids on the swingset, adults acting like kids playing baseball in the yard). We're very casual party people.
For all of our kids we have done something more for the adults for a 1st birthday, especially with Rio whose "friends" were all babies too. We went just a weeeeee bit overboard for the boys' first birthday but I couldn't help myself. My advice is do as little or as big as what you're comfortable with because at this point it's more about you guys celebrating Jack than Jack having much of an idea about what's going on! As for time - work around his nap! Last thing you want is a grouchy bday boy!! For Rio's party we got some flack from friends for having it mid afternoon when others' kids were sleeping. Well too bad, Rio wasn't and it was her party!! Have fun :)
