Really, you have two options.
1) Buy the same toys for everyone. This may seem like a valid option, but in practice it doesn't really work. You could have FIVE of the exact same toys in your house expecting that everyone will play harmoniously together because, hey! everyone has his own toy! The problem is, the ONLY toy child A will want is the one his brother has in his hands. Of course no other toy will do, and shame on you for trying to get child A to see that the other four toys are just as good. Besides, it can be incredibly boring to have two of everything (for them and for me). Sigh.
or
2) Purchase only one of any given toy, directing each toy to the child whose interests and/or personality best matches it. You know, do the same thing parents of single children do all the time. This option sounds plausible, really it does. Yet, with the limited choices of toys available and the fact that your children spend every waking moment together, trying to find that perfect toy for one vs. the other is harder than one might think. What one likes is often what the other likes, which gets tricky. For the toddler, you just pray like heck that there is something, somewhere he doesn't already have access to that he'll like.
So what's a mom to do? To some extent, I try to make things somewhat comparable between gifts for the boys. How do I make things "fair" without going crazy in the process?
I found a blog that talked about simple gift giving. This year I'm going to try it and see if it helps. It goes something like this.
Gifts are designated into different categories:
- something they WANT
- something they NEED
- something to WEAR
- something to READ
- something to WATCH
- something to LISTEN TO
- something to PLAY WITH
- something to CREATE
What I like is that these categories are gift giving guidelines. Hopefully they will help keep me organized in my shopping, making it easier to keep things fairly balanced. I have given myself permission to give group gifts and decided the boys aren’t necessarily guaranteed an item in every category. So we shall see how it goes. I'll keep you updated on my experience this year.
P.S. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Oh seriously, twin gift giving makes me want to die. Add in their birthdays two weeks before and it's not sane.
And YES to how two of the same never actually pans out the way you'd think. They always want the other one. Always.
What I'm doing is "shopping" the attic for little man (is that awful?) because we have SO many toys and a lot of them are in great shape, and I can't justify spending money on more toys that we don't need or already own. I'm getting him a couple new things, but everything else will be found in our house (hey, take it while he's young enough to not understand, right?).
And for the big two? For their birthdays they are getting a fishtank (so an "experience"), and then one toy each (separate parts of a large playset). For Christmas we're doing a mix - a one toy that is basically the same (different colors though), a few that are meant to be shared, and one big gift geared directly to each boy's individual interests, plus one big gift (my old laptop, stripped down - free!) to share.
I like the ideas of the categories, but I don't think it's really feasible for how we do it. I feel it's my responsibility to give them their clothes and their "needs", so those aren't gifts. (I mean, when they're older, if they desperately want expensive sneakers or something, I'd consider those a gift. But not normal clothes.) I refuse to give books because we have too many already.
This year my bigger concern is teaching them to give gifts. That could get interesting.
Oh see and we do want need wear read. I like the extra categories !
We give different and have told them that this way they can have 2 gifts because they share with each other. It seems to work at our house.
That list is crazy expensive huge!!
We've been doing
Want
Need
Wear
Read
for about 4yrs now and it's AWESOME!
Lol. I don't plan on giving them each 8 gifts or anything, but I am going to try to find stocking stuffers ect that fit int he categories too. Plus, whatever I dot get category wise is what I'll suggest to my mom/family as gift possibilities if they ask.
It's hard with twins. Last year we ended up getting 2 of everything because if we don't, then there is fighting. It seemed to go ok but it was a lot of stuff! Not sure I want to go that route again this year. Not really sure what to do. It will be easier as they get older and develop separate interests but honestly right now they like all the same things.
There should be a manual for gift giving for twins!

Hi from ICLW...that list is great!!!
HI from ICLW. Gift giving always gives me headaches but I usually can find something to please everyone.
What I like to do with children is not to give them gifts but to take them on adventures. "birthday adventures" or "christmas adventures" etc and then make a memory craft with them. Like home-made ornaments. Ususally children get SOOO many gifts from family that gifts from parents are just icing.
Great post!
Happy ICLW! 33
Thanks for sharing that website! Hopefully that will help with my constant shopping dilemma.
Best of luck on yours!
