Jack failed his 15 month screen today because he isn't walking (he will walk holding my one hand, but not independently) and doesn't have more words. If he doesn't drastically improve this month, they want us to have him evaluated by EI. I'm sad.
As much as I didn't want to be, it seems I am still desperate for him to be typical. I should have known better than to wish for that...it's almost a given that I won't get it.
Sometimes I think I have my shit all figured out...that I am okay...but things like this to throw me into a spiral. I know it doesn't change him or anything, but I am so tired of people pointing out every weakness in my kids -- makes me feel like I've failed them and fills me with guilt.

Sigh. I'm sorry.
You know, I don't actually even feel like 15 months is that old for not walking independently. Not delayed enough to qualify for EI. He stands, he cruises and steps ... I'd not even worry about it, honestly. Maybe give him one of the push-toys to walk with if you haven't, but beyond that? MEH.
And words. Seriously? He's 15 months. How many words is he supposed to have?
Try to just remember - kids do things in their own time. He's not atypical. He's Jack. He's fine. I really honestly believe that.
Oh goodness. I've always heard 18 months is win normal for walking - sounds like he's getting super close all by himself. Speech too seems to be an explosion thing. I think D went from almost no words to tons between 15 and 18 mo. Hang in there.
My kid didn't walk until she was 16 months and I was soooo concerned about it that I took her in to see the doctor. Things are probably different here in Canada, but I was told that paedriatricians won't even see kids for walking issues until they're two, just because the age range to start walking is so broad. I know how hard it is not to worry, but he's absolutely "typical"! :)
I'm sorry you're sad, but I sincerely find it crazy that he failed a screen for not walking or talking much at 15 months. It seems 15 months is a little early to be raising red flags about developments many kids reach later than that point.
You have NOT failed them. Your kiddos are loved and that's what matters.
Addy didn't walk until she was around 15 months old, they are all so very different.
My boys were 19 months old when they walked. I'm not kidding. Both of them. 19 months. They didn't have a ton of words then either. For some reason we didn't get referred to EI and I don't know why but it turns out we didn't need it. One day they just got up and walked across the room. One did it and then the other did it. They are 4 now and there is no stopping them. As for talking, I was getting concerned because I felt they were late so I signed them up for EI for speech and by the time they called (8 months later) they didn't need it anymore.
My point is that every kid is different. I know you know that. Try not to worry too much about this. Maybe Jack is just like my boys - taking his sweet time. My boys were very efficient crawlers and I think they saw no reason to walk before 19 months.
Is Jack a good crawler?
Please don't feel guilt about this. There is nothing to feel guilty about. Jack will walk in his own time and then you will wonder what you were so worried about.

Honestly. I've known SO many kids that weren't walking at 15 months.
I think your ped is being super sensitive. And she should know that you are a super sensitive mom and should give you some slack.
I'm sorry !
That kid'll be running by the end of the month. You just wait.
I'm sorry you are worried. Worrying about your kid's development sucks. You certainly haven't failed him. A random suggestion from my own experience -- if you have him wearing socks or shoes a lot, take them off and let him be barefoot. My little one walked 20 minutes after I removed the socks.
I work in a nursing home..I get so annoyed that people expect all older people to be sweet, quiet and just sit there..Hello~ everyone is different, older people are just younger people with age lines..NOT EVERYONE FITS IN A MUFFIN TIN..some people are squares, some are triangles,etc..not everyone fits in Mold of life..and that's ok..we all all different..
JACK is perfect and healthy,he doesn't have to follow some rediculous standard set up by some Doctor's..last I checked some Doctor's don't fit my idea of perfect..they are a big Fail..
You're one of the best Mama Bear's I've seen, you advocate for your boy's,You and your family are not a fail..You are wonderful..
I'm sorry! This is so stressful for you. *hug*
You know, I think it sounds great that he can stand and walk holding onto a hand. He is probably just right there.
Echoing what everyone else already said... my Car.sten walked at 19 months and he is completely typical. (I actually think he was so BIG that it hindered him from walking, and of course Al.ex wasn't walking either so there was no role model.) I think you have nothing to worry about, but I know that's much easier said than done. I also think the word thing is baloney.
15 months this week, also not walking independently (he took his first independent steps, about four of them, yesterday) and very few words. I know they're going to want to refer us out when we go for his next checkup. But I also know that he's just fine and he'll do it when he's ready.
