"You'll be hearing from our office to schedule the surgery," said the doctor as we were leaving. I didn't say anything, just nodded and opened the door to the reception area. The reception room was bare with the exception of two people, a woman about my age and her little boy. They were sitting right next to the door to the exit.
"Oh, look Jackson. A baby!" she said as we approached. "How old is he?"
"He is 11 months adjusted," I replied. She gave me the same look that everyone else does when I give that answer. "That is how old he would be if I had him on his due date." A dim look of understanding crossed her face. I grabbed the door knob, trying to make an escape.
"Jackson is 11 months, too. His birthday is next month on the 16th." My due date. Figures. "He sure looks cute in his glasses, doesn't he, Jackson?" she said motioning to Sh.awn. "What is your name young man?" I told them.
"Hi, Sh.awn. You sure are sweet." Her chatter continued while I tried to figure out how to leave without being down right rude, although being rude did cross my mind more than once. "Do you have any other children?" she asked.
"Yes, Sh.awn has a twin brother," I replied.
"Oh, is he special needs, too?"
My heart stopped. My breath seemed to leave in an instant. It felt like I had been kicked in the gut. Hard. I stammered something about how Ja.son seems to be developing typically, how I had another appointment, and managed to finally get through the door to leave.
The scene has been playing on my mind at every free moment since.
Special needs...
Let's just say that this hasn't been the best week.
Fuck that woman.
I need to forget about that woman and her insensitivity...
stop the mind torture that I am inflicting on myself...
focus on what's important, right?
And frankly, there isn't anything more important than this right now...

SPECIAL NEEDS? WHO THE FUCK DOES SHE THINK SHE IS? I have no words for that bitch....I am fuming mad right along with you...
Fuck that woman is right.
I think I once told a nurse that "all babies have special needs" - because its true. Even "normal" babies each have their own little routines and toys and everything else.
Your kids are doing great. YOU are doing great. Fuck her.
I'm sorry people are so insensitive:(
Love the video very precious!! Nothing more heartwarming than a baby laughing..so sweet..
Keeping your family in my thoughts..
Sandy
I hate comments like that. LIke you need another kick in the gut?
But you're right - focus on your cuties and it makes it easier to almost forget about comments like that.
Hoping that the surgery goes well and that there is NO MORE NEED for any more, of ANY kind.
And frankly there isn't anything more delicious than a babies armpits :)
Please don't let this get you down.
You are making such great strides.
So many things are uncertain, but there are so many things to beat and to celebrate.
You have 2 amazing, smart, funny and beautiful boys.
...yes, the insensitivity of people is appalling...and that woman is completely clueless. fuck her and try not to spend another second thinking about the conversation.
just so you know, your family is AMAZING. you are a wonderful mom who demonstrates great strength and love. and your boys are beyond adorable - smart boys with such cute faces.
the video clip you posted made me smile big. hope you are your family had a lovely christmas and have a new year full of love, happiness and good fortune.
I don't even know what to say. That must have felt awful but like everyone else has said, you are doing a great job and your boys are awesome.
aww stacie - i am so sorry you had to endure that comment from anyone! -- i can't believe how ODD some people are in their comments, i would like to believe she didn't mean anything by it - but it truly did sound awful! hopefully she thought the same thing to herself right after it came out of her mouth. your boys are beautiful guys - who are growing and thriving and being loved by all they meet. (even those of us who have only met them thru countless hours of amazing writing and photos / video from their equally amazing mother. you rock lady -- your kids are great -- and you have such a wonderfully bright future with them! thanks for sharing their video - i love laughing babies!! i hope you have atleast one final entry before the end of 2008 - so you can end this year on a positive - put it all behind you (God knows it's been one HELL of YEAR for you & yoru family) and look forward to a very happy and healthy 2009. best - julie2007
Ummmm, hello. Just had to go for a little walkies around my house, after reading your post. When I read what the woman said, all the air got sucked out of me. I can only imagine how it affected you.
That woman is special needs, Stacie. I'm not even being bitchy - she truly is special needs, totally lacking in empathy, appropriateness, and some decent common fucking sense. Seriously.
People are so dumb sometimes it beggars belief.
Your boys are divine. You are amazing. Bono would tell you to not let the bastards grind you down.

When B is sporting his helmet, we get the special needs thing too... it's annoying & I don't like it one bit. BUT - I have noticed that people say it more out of kindness than ugliness - they seem concerned if that makes sense? People tend to say the most stupid things, but often it comes from a place of ignorance (and insensitivity) - I've found that people are curious about anything 'different'... they just go about asking things all wrong. I'm sorry you had to endure that woman in the waiting room. I know it can be hard to not let people get under your skin... we want our babies to be just like everyone else's, to blend in seamlessly... think about how far your boys have come - how many obstacles you guys have navigated on their short journey - YOU are an amazing Mommy!!
Fuck her.
SO rude.
