Where Did the Time Go?

School starts next week. I am still trying to wrap my mind around that idea, but whether I get over my denial or not, school will still start next week. It is sad to see the days of summer rapidly disappear. Where did the days go? I had all of these plans (lists of things to do over all of the summer time off) but did absolutely nothing!

Well, incubating the two little ones did take some time and energy, I know, but...what about the other stuff I had planned? The cleaning, the home improving, the wild and crazy trips? Where did that stuff go? Out the window is the only answer!

I went to school yesterday to start setting up my classroom. I usually enjoy the process once I get over the initial shock of the condition my room is in after the long break. There is always inches of dust on everything and the furniture ends up in piles at the edges of the room. It was no different yesterday. This time there was also an unusual smell somewhere. I still haven't identified the cause of it. The investigation continues on that one!

I have often wondered what the custodial staff at my school does over the summer. We were told that the school would be re-keyed, re-roofed, and thoroughly cleaned. Well, I am using the same key, the same roof is on the buildings, and no cleaning occurred. So what did they do all summer? I guess it is the same thing they do all year long...not a whole heck of a lot. It just doesn't pay to be proactive and efficient, I suppose.

Don't get me wrong, I love my custodian as a person. He is a very charming elderly man, who is so sweet and kind. But, the extent of the cleaning he does is to empty my trash, sweep the floors (and sometimes forget to pick up the piles of dirt he creates), and to empty the pencil sharpener. That is it. Nothing else. It is no wonder that the kids and I are not sick more often.

Sigh.

I am hoping to make it to winter break before I have to take time off for the babies. That puts me at 34ish weeks I think. The OB has already said that I may go out before then, so this goal might be a little lofty. Whatever the case, I would like to work as long as possible. I already feel more than a little guilty that I'll be leaving my kids during the school year. They are my school babies, and I do want the best for them (and the self-confident me thinks that I am the best for them).

I hope to stay out until spring break in mid April. I worked a long time to get pregnant and have children. I need to be home and celebrate the miracles we created. Still, there is that guilt...I guess the "mother's guilt"--whether they are my school kids or my biological kids, the guilt is there--has already started. We'll just have to see how it goes.

I don't know if you need advice, and this isn't really meant in that way. I also have twins and thought I would work until the end, but my body simply couldn't. I felt guilty about having to call up one morning and say I didn't think I could come in any more, but at that point it was more of a relief. I was overwhelmingly tired all the time. I also felt guilty the day I called to say I had decided to stay home and not return to work. I have to say in both circumstances, my employer was very understanding, and we are still friends to this day. In the end, you need to do what your heart tells you is right for your family and not worry about what others think. Honestly, I didn't have time to think much about my job once the babies were born. Follow your instincts, they know where to lead you.
