On Blogging

Reading my last several posts might make you wonder about how I am really doing. I am, for the most part, okay. I have my moments of utter fear, but I'd like to think that anyone who has gone through what we went through over the years would feel those feelings too.

Blogging is an interesting experience for me. I don't often sit down at my computer with an idea about which to write. Instead, I sit and let the words sort of pour out of me. Granted that means that what you end up reading is usually unrefined and maybe a bit boring, but it is the true me at that given time.

I use this space as my personal diary. It's a place where I can just let it all out there and not worry about what people may think of me. (If you knew me in real life, you'd know that I am not much of a talker as a listener.) I try not to censor what I write, but I am well aware that this is a public space. I really don't want to outright offend someone if I can not, so I have quite a few posts in my dashboard that I've never published. More often than not though, I make a few tweaks and let the words stand for themselves.

Sometimes, what manages to make its way to my computer screen is a complete surprise. I can get so wrapped up in the day to day living, I don't give myself a chance to really think and reflect about things that I see and hear.

Other times, in the process of writing, a light bulb goes off in my head and I'll suddenly understand why a day was as crappy as it was. I'll finally figure out that I was more hurt by something than I might have realized or that an event has triggered my insecurities and fears.

I think I like it that way. I like that I am learning about me through this space.

I made a mistake last week and inadvertently posted a link to this blog on the public family blog. My niece found this space and sent me a text message about things she could have only learned here. I was panicked.

Actually, I was devastated.

I thought for sure I'd have to do something drastic to keep this space away from the eyes of people I did not want to read it.

In the end, I asked her not to read. She said she'd not, but really there isn't much I can do if she decided to go against that promise.

Once again I'm thinking about why I am so reluctant to allow people in my real life to read this space. Yes, people know about it, but very few read here (that I know of).

I don't think I write about things that would be hurtful to people in real life. Yet, I do think that if many people in real life were reading I'd hold back and not be true to myself.

Plus, I certainly don't want them to think I am a total nut job when they may think I have my shit together. My mind wrestles with the idea that it doesn't really matter if they think I am a total nut job anyway, so who cares?

Oh, I don't know.

The one thing blogging doesn't do for me is give me all the answers. Bummer. It would be really nice if it did.

What it can do, though, is allow me to connect with other people in the world (who are much wiser and more brilliant than I could ever hope to be) who have been there before me. So I ask all of you. If you are an anonymous blogger, why do you blog anonymously? If you blog under your name, do you feel you hold back in what you write? I'd love to read your thoughts on the matter.

I blog anonymously because I value the privacy that comes with anonymity. I want to be free to say whatever I like without it coming back into my public life or my work-life.

My blog isn't anonymous, because I used it as you do your other blog.. a way to share updates and photos with family and friends. There are many many days that I wish I WAS anonymous though. When I have thoughts I want to get out, but don't necessarily want my name attached to. Or don't want to be judged for.

(PS.. you know that if you click your profile on blogger, it shows both blogs listed?)

I have given two or three of my BFF's links to the blog when I first started it. Two of them read it occasionally and I'm not sure about the other one as we've lost contact since she moved (and I haven't pursued it at all).

I like having the Bff's know what's going on even if they don't understand it (aka anything TTC or about miscarriages or RE's, etc).

None of my family has the link. Some may have found it but I highly doubt they'd even go looking. Meh.

Excellent post, Stacie. I blog under my name, but have only told two IRL friends about it. My husband doesn't know about my blog.

Like you, my blog is my diary. Sometimes I need to vent or try to make sense of situations. My hubby's inclination is to 'fix' things; I don't always want someone to fix me, I need to work through my own feelings at my own pace.

The stuff I'm working through... is really pretty private. I don't want my entire world to be giving me advice or their opinion. I need space for just me, and my blog is that space.

(((Hugs))) to you and also my thoughts and prayers are with your neighbors.

Stacie;

I'm mostly an anonymous blogger...my real name and the names of my kids are used on my blog, but no one who knows me in real life knows that I blog. Perhaps, they've stumbled upon it since it's not private, but I haven't heard of anyone finding it.

I did tell 2 friends recently about it, but they are my friends because they both have twins, with one with CP...just like me. So I'm OK with them reading it. They get it.

I haven't told anyone else in real life about my blog for basically the same reasons as you. I don't want to have to hold back...or worry about offending someone. The point of MY blog is not to update family and friends about my family...the point is to connect with other parents who have children with special needs. That's the whole point. SO there's no reason to share it with anyone I know.

I do sometimes hold back what I write on mine.....actually I think I more change wording than hold back, hopeful to not offend but then again I KNOW I have offended family and you know what, I don't care! It's my blog and I write about what I want when I want and if you don't like it don't read it again! Not to mention if your offended then maybe the point got across to ya.........
My father in law reads mine and sometimes complains to Chris about a post when they have lunch together and then chris tells me(maybe weeks later) and I always say, so what, i can write what i want and wont apologize for it either.... How else can you get other opinions/advice/been there done that if your not REAL....
Plus I think cowards are the anonymous type, OWN your words :-)

Hi,
I read every word and was like, "oh my gosh, is she reading my mind?"

My family knows of my blog. For some, it is the elephant in the room.

At times, I want a blog that they do not know of, as I do censor myself, sometimes, without meaning to.

And I am a social worker with some pretty major opinions on social justice issues (I'm a flaming liberal)...and when I write about those sorts of things...well, it doesn't help friendships...not that I have many, as a quiet, meek person...

But, after blogging for the past few mos and being unable to hold back on saying some things, i have suddenly found my voice again.

I am less passive,
more confident
my skin is thickening
and the "I don't give a f what you think" is starting to come back.

And I'm kind of glad about that.

I'm a writer. I process life as a I write. And it's too bad if I have to censor myself...b/c writing is how my voice is most easily able to come out and allow me to relate to the world.

So in recent mos., my conservative neighbors may like me less,

but I have learned that maybe it's ok to have an opinion, but perhaps be more

rational in stating it.

Oh, and every word you write on the PTST of IF/Loss/etc...it's bang on accurate.

Signed,
Usually a quiet follower, but just couldn't resist posting...

I guess you can say I am semi-anonymous, as I have a pseudonym, but you can find my blog through the OBOS work I did. And my husband's aunt found it. And passed it on to my MIL. Yeah. Did not like that. They were horrified I was so open about personal stuff online. I'm glad I never talked about them or about my relationship with Mr S.

I probably shouldn't comment on this because I don't have a blog. Well, I do but I only wrote in it a few times and then completely chickened out. I am so afraid of friends or family reading it that I became paralized with fear every time I sat down to write in it.

How much is too much? How much is not enough? What's the point if I can't share the whole me? So many questions. No answers.

I still want to start a blog that I post on regularly. But the fear remains.

I am interested to hear what others say about this issue.

Oh, I bet that really worried you. It makes PERFECT sense and I sense your panic.

My sister is essentially the only IRL person who reads my blog. Let me tell you I sometimes wish I had never let her in. Only a few times have I had something I wanted to discuss without her knowing. It was tough, but it passed. Thankfully she and I are very close and there isn't a thing she doesn't know... well, mostly... always gotta keep some secrets.

I need to rip into fertiles. It feels good, what can I say. I work with the worst offender. I MUST remain in hiding.

i blog under my own name my family reads it. sometimes they don't like what I have to say, but most of hte time, it's no secret.
there are definatly times I wish that no one I "know" could read certain posts, but honestly those times are few and far between.

There are certain things I hold back about since I blog under my real name and it would create a shitstorm if I were to let them out. I would love to rant about my bitchy SIL or some of the crazy ass things my MIL does but, OMG, it wouldn't be worth the drama.

Stacie said...

HM- Yes, I know that blogger lists both blogs under my profile name. I have removed my "about me" page and any links to personal info about me from the family blog for just that reason!

Thank you so much for commenting on this post everyone! I really love this part of blogging--hearing about other people's views! I think I can relate to just about every single one of the comments, too. :-)
