I have begun to really stress about Ja.son's upcoming strabismus surgery on Tuesday. I mean seriously stress. It isn't like we haven't been through the whole surgery thing before, and this surgery is far less...intense...than the surgeries we've been through, but I am on Freak Out mode.
This last Wednesday I had to take him to the pediatrician to get a medical clearance. He completely lost his shit once we entered one of the exam rooms. He wouldn't let them take his blood pressure and literally ripped the cuff off of his arm. He wouldn't even let them take his height (37.5 inches!) and weight (30.2 pounds!) without screaming his head off. Then he just clung to me and said, "Are you alright?" in a sad hiccupy voice over and over for the rest of the appointment. It was heartbreaking. We both left the appointment spent.
If that visit is any indication, the surgery is going to be an awful experience.
Medical procedures are different now. They aren't little babies who can't really understand what the hell is going on around them anymore.
Now, they know there is a strong possibility they are going to be hurt by the person wearing white.
Now, they are afraid.
And rightly so. They've had a lot of crappy shit done to them in their short little lives.
I've also got a sweet little gem said by the neurologist racing around in my head. He made a comment about Ja.son possibly having a reaction to anesthesia. He said it in passing, in an offhanded sort of way. But it stuck and now it worries me. I wish I had asked him to clarify... (Yes, I could call him and ask him, but he isn't the most upbeat individual. If he said anything else negative it would really throw me over the edge. I can't afford that at the moment.)
Sigh. Right now I am trying to sit in denial and pretend that all is okay in the world.

Our next door neighbors purchased the same car we had several months back. I told Is.aac at the time that I bet they were pregnant again. That in itself wasn't that horrible. I don't know them well, so the pregnancy wasn't going to be flaunted in my face all the time or anything.
Two weeks ago, though, she called to me while I was getting the boys out of the car. I spied the obvious bump on my way over and cringed on the inside. I slapped on my happy face and went to chit chat.
She's pregnant with fraternal twin boys and is just about to reach viability.
She's seeing Dr. Doom.
Twin B had an enlarged bladder, a possible clubbed foot, and possible issues with his heart. Dr. Doom strongly suggested she have amnios done on the babies. Both are normal.
At this point, I was getting sick to my stomach. The similarities between her experience with Dr. Doom and mine were too eerie.
She's a teacher (for a different district) also (freaky how similar our lives are, right?) and was on her two week break. She should have started back to work this week.
Her car has been in the driveway all week long, and I've seen her sister bring food to her every day.
My mind is telling me she's on bed rest now. My mind tells me to go over and offer her support. I mean, I know how hard that shit is!
My heart won't let me walk through the door and go talk to her. It brings up way too much pain and bad memories.
I've contemplated just sending Is.aac over with something yummy for them. But I can't get myself to make anything for her, either.
I just plain suck.
Apparently I still have some issues to work through.

Speaking of twins, there are four sets of twins on my block. Somewhere I read that the national average for twins or higher order multiples is 3%. My block is averaging 10%. Strange, huh?

Here's more statistics for you. We've recently donated to the Children's Hospital Los Angeles. They are in the process of building a bigger, better hospital. It was supposed to be finished in 2008. They are now saying it won't be done until next year. Anyway, the receipt they sent had some "Did You Know?" facts on it. The part that stood out to me was this:
"(The hospital) performs nearly 14,000 pediatric surgeries a year...nearly 650 neurosurgeries..."
Sh.awn had 8 surgeries during those "very dark days."
His surgeries comprised 1.2% of their yearly total.
That thought makes me sick to my stomach.

We are now down to two remaining members of the Fab Four. George followed John in the afterlife on Wednesday. I am hoping that Paul and Ringo stick around for awhile.
---
Tomorrow (or today I suppose, depending on when you read this) is my birthday. I will be 38 years old.
I'm not really all that concerned about the getting older part except for the implications about my fertility.
My biological clock is no longer ticking...it's now more of a consistent gong.
I really hope this year brings us a real, live baby at the end of it.

1st and foremost -- *~*HAPPY BIRTHDAY*~* ----
2nd strabismus surgeries happen all the time - we were in line for one when they noticed kay didn' have muscle damage - it is nerves - so they canceled it and we are still waiting to see what they will do for her...... i digress....
try not to worry about it - and maybe have is.aac call the doc and ask about the reaction possibilities... he's a trooper - he's going to weather this too. try not to stress - kids can sense it!
the neighbor.
well - if you don't send something you aren't in the wrong - as you didn't know what / if anything happened. if you do send something - with is.aac (BTW whole foods does amazing stuff you can just pick up - no cooking involved) - you will be chalking one up on your side for good deeds. . . . and when you are pregnant again - be sure to share your due date with her - and i am sure she'll send a meal or 2 in return for you when you deliver.
it's hard - i know. i still struggle with no new baby..... so the hubs and i got a puppy today -- WTF are we thinking? i'll let you know in a few days.....
and - as for old - you are NOT old - i did my successful nicholas cycle leading up to my 40th bday (and i have crappy FSH) - and he was "created and inserted" on my 4oth!! you are not old....
again
*~* HAPPY BIRTHDAY *~*
One day your older you is going to think...I wish I wouldn't have been so stressed out those early years. Look how it all turned out. I'm so happy. (you will be you know)
It's IMPOSSIBLE to tell yourself that you will think that about yourself and want to change now. :) Get all of that. ha ha
I do this all of the time. I think...I wish I had a delorean and some lightening.
but then I'm afraid I'd head for the future and never come back :)
Good luck on the surgery.
I hope your neighbor's babies are ok.
And HAPPY BIRTHDAY !
Happy Birthday!
I hope everything (all of it!) goes well for you.
I'm sorry..............for all of it!
Try to imagine how scared your neighbor is and see if you can't go over to offer some hard earned wisdom and insight, maybe of the mistakes that were made by medical staff that she could maybe avoid, IDK just reaching I guess................
My oldest went through a phase where she HATED anything or one related to a doctor. Soon as we got in the building she would scream, etc. Now she is better, but it is my son who freaks out as soon as someone comes into the room. It's hard.
About your neighbor - is she maybe an IVF'er, too? I know you know all this, but if you think back to where you were at her point in time, knowing what you know now, would you want someone to knock on your door and talk about the journey you went on, or would you rather not know (that's not a loaded judgemental question, by the way, just wondering if you had that whole-hindsight-and-someone-else-has-been-there input, if you'd have wanted it?)
I can see your perspective really, really well. She may love knowing what it's like having someone with so much in common with her, though. My neighbor had a daughter a few months after my two. She's now pregnant again, from the moment she tried after she took the breaks off (as she laughingly tells me). Our kids will all be going to the same school together. I just can't motivate myself to spend a lot of time with her, so don't think I'm having a go at you because I know where you are, I really do.
And mostly: Happy birthday, sweetheart.
Stacie...I can completely understand the avoidance mode with the neighbor. You know what your limits are. What about ordering a meal for delivery? That way you are doing something nice but not getting too involved. Also, maybe you could write her a note instead of going over.
I'm so sorry Jason is having such a bad reaction to medical visits. I hope the surgery goes smoothly.
{{{Hugs}}} and prayers.
We've seen too much of hospitals and doctors offices, haven't we?
Robbie is the same way. Last week at the GI office, he started crying hysterically as soon as we entered the waiting room. They don't even do anything bad there. Doesn't matter. Doctors are not to be trusted. :(
hi there, my son is also frightened of the dr. office and will scream and not let the doctor to a check up.
regarding the surgery - my son had a dermoid cyst removed and i was so worried about how he would react to the situation because he is so frightened of doctors. my pedia. and surgeon suggested that they give him some sort of medication to calm him down (can't remember the name) and also forget what happened up until the point he fell asleep. i was conflicted with giving the medication, but if i didn't he would have been very upset and scared. anyhow, it calmed him right down and my husband walked with him into the operating room and he was fine. just wanted to let you know that this could be a possible option for you to consider.
i will send you warm, happy, thoughts.
First and foremost, happy birthday, sweetie.
It sounds like a hell of a week. Maybe it would help to dedicate yourself to one stress at a time. First up, the surgery. Next, the neighbour.
Happy Birthday!
How about picking up a frozen lasagna at the grocery store and having hubby take it over- it requires little effort, and little likelihood that you'll be cornered into an unwelcome conversation.
Happy Birthday!!!!
I hear you on the boys being afraid of the Dr. We took Al.ex to the eye dr. last week and they sent us home with eye drops for dilation because he was so squirmy and unhappy with being there. Unfortunately it comes with the territory of having lots of Dr. appts. for them... I've noticed Al.ex doing better when he doesn't have to go as often - and he also HATES being closed in those little rooms!
As for the neighbor, I agree with Helen's point - if you could put your former self in her spot, what would you want? Maybe there's some way to put out your feelers as to her situation? But I do understand not wanting to go there, too. Lots of hard feelings involved.
The surgery is going to go just fine!!!
The good thing about surgery (besides the outcome) is that Jason will be asleep/out of it for a lot of his visit. Thus; less freaking out.
Please try not to be so hard on yourself. Don't expect so much from yourself when you don't feel up to it and try to stop thinking about "shoulds". "I should do this...I should do that".
The only thing you should do is be good to yourself.
Good luck on Tuesday. I will send positive vibes for an uneventful and successful surgery.
Take care!
Carrie
